Service and Philanthropy

Members of the Panhellenic Community are always supporting their own philanthropies, other organization's philanthropies, and doing thousands of community service hours. While we strive to support the individual philanthropies of the six sororities on Carnegie Mellon's campus, we also have a Panhellenic-wide supported cause called Circle of Sisterhood.

Circle of Sisterhood

Circle of Sisterhood is the National Panhellenic Council's joint philanthropy. Its mission statement is as follows:

The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation is a mechanism by which all sorority women can stand together across affiliation, age, color, and creed to make a difference in the lives of millions of girls and women around the world. Collectively, we are one of the largest communities of college-education women in the world while not even 7% of the world – men and women combined – has college degrees and 2/3 of all illiterate adults are women. Standing together as one community, we will give girls and women an equal chance for rewarding lives and livelihoods through schooling, the learning of a trade, or even a college degree.

Whether founded in the 1800s or in the 2000s, sororities place a high priority on volunteering and community engagement. Collectively, sororities donate millions of domestic dollars every year to help eliminate life-shattering diseases, raise awareness for important health issues, as well as tackling local issues such as domestic-violence against women, illiteracy among youth, environmental stewardship, and aid to the disabled and aging.

And the world is changing. Boundaries are disintegrating and technology allows us to live in a global neighborhood. Today’s sorority women understand and appreciate others on a global scale and realize that they have the wherewithal to make a difference for the less fortunate both domestically and globally. As college educated women, we understand the value of achieving an education, and we believe that every girl in the world deserves the opportunity to go to school.

Over the years, Carnegie Mellon’s Panhellenic Community has done different things to help support Circle of Sisterhood, including hosting a documentary screening of Girl Rising. We strive to raise awareness to Circle of Sisterhood’s cause and support them in all the ways that we are able to.

Greek Sing

Greek Sing aims to aid philanthropic and community service efforts for the betterment of the Greek community, Carnegie Mellon campus community, and the Pittsburgh Community. For the 2019, 2020, and 2021 years, our partnered charity is 412 Food Rescue for whom we've pledged to donate $200,000. All six of the Panhellenic sororities participate in Greek Sing. Greek Sing Fundraising, and participate in community service efforts for that years charity. The sororities historically have competed in the doubles division pairing with a fraternity to put on a 13 minute musical comprised of live music, dance, and acting with home built sets, costumes, and self arranged music.
